Taxidermy Competition 2025
This year the competition included public participation at HuntEx. All the entries were displayed on our stand, along with life size elephant, rhino and lion mounts. Interactive clay sculpting demonstrations were also held.

How to Evaluate Taxidermy Work
First Impressions:
- Stand back , look at the mount and allow yourself to form an overall opinion.
- Size does not count – do not base your opinion on the size of the horns or the animal
- Special natural physical features does not count- you are evaluating the taxidermy work.
- Good taxidermy work shows in the finer details – the eyes, the ears, the nose and the mouth.
Overall composition
- does the pose look artistic and imaginative, but still natural?
- Is there symmetry (balance)?
- Are the various elements in good condition – the skin/ the horns, etc
Does it look real, and does it look alive
- Check for anatomical correctness
- Is the eye colour, shape, position and direction of stare correct?
- Are the ears positioned and shaped correctly and in balance?
- Is the nose too flat or too sharp? Is the snout colour too dull or too shiny?
- Does the mount have muscle definitions/ veins showing?
- If a tongue or teeth are showing – is the size, shape and colour correct?
- A Crooked mouth that makes an animal look like it’s smiling, is a common flaw to watch for
Final Decision
- Is the overall look pleasing?
- Would you be happy to have this in your house?
- Would you recommend this work?
